The history of Executive
Women International®
dates back to 1938 when Lucille Johnson Perkins of San Francisco conceived
the idea of forming an association in which key women and top secretaries
could work with their executives in the interest of their firms and for
civic betterment.
On March 28, 1938, the
initial San Francisco group met to organize officially. Bylaws were
adopted and on April 29, Articles of Incorporation were filed with the
State of California under the name of Executives' Secretaries, Inc.
Los Angeles business
executives and their representatives recognized the value of the
organization, and in May of 1939, a chapter was chartered in that city.
Since that time, many chapters in key cities have been chartered as top
executives of major firms recognized the value of membership and gave
support to the movement.
On August 17, 1964, the
first Canadian chapter was chartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, giving
the organization an international image.
In April 1965, the
Indianapolis Chapter was chartered. Marge Tarplee was elected our first
president.
On May 21, 1977, during the
30th Annual Meeting, the Delegate Body voted to change the name of the
organization to Executive Women International®, in recognition of the
diverse careers held by its representatives.
The membership directory of
EWI® is a "blue book" of international companies, industries and
professions. At present, chapters are located throughout the United
States, Canada and Europe.
