BOOK REVIEW
Women and
the Leadership Q
by Shoya Zichy
Leadership skills can be discovered
within each of us. This volume is a guide for anyone interested in
uncovering his or her own leadership style. Much of the author's research
was done with a large group of female executives, hence the focus on
women. The author explains that the framework used to define various
leadership styles is not gender-specific. Both men and women are found in
each style of leadership.
To get the most out of this interactive
work, the reader must spend time answering Zichy's leadership
questionnaire, based in part, on the results of psychological tests,
including Myers-Briggs. The 38-item test helps the reader pinpoint his or
her leadership style. The questionnaire addresses how a person deals with
workplace challenges like planning before starting a task, scheduling,
meeting people and copying with deadlines.
Zichy comes up with eight leadership
styles and repeatedly points out that the system is not intended to label
a person. Instead, its designed to explain how personality differences
affect the way a person leaders and relates to others.
For each leadership personality, Zichy
documents the typical traits and most suitable careers. He also names
well-known leaders with that personality.
Remember, the idea is to explain how
personality differences affect the way you lead and relate to others.
With your skills defined, you will be better prepared to map out a
successful and fulfilling career. McGraw-Hill, 2000, $21.95
